How We Rate Dog Parks & Gear
We don't hide behind a star rating. Here's exactly how our scoring system works — all 10 dimensions, our testing conditions, and the methodology behind our exclusive Social Vibe Index™.
Every park we review and every piece of gear we test is scored on 10 dimensions. Each dimension has a specific weight, a defined testing method, and a clear explanation. If you're a third-party reviewer, you should be able to read this page and replicate our process.
That's the point. If our scores can't be independently verified, they're worthless.
The 10 Scoring Dimensions
| # | Dimension | Weight | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Safety & Security | 20% | Fencing quality, double-gate entry, lighting, emergency access, and overall physical safety of the park. |
| 2 | Cleanliness & Maintenance | 15% | Waste stations, general cleanliness, grass/ground condition, and evidence of regular upkeep. |
| 3 | Amenities & Facilities | 15% | Water stations, shade structures, seating, separate small-dog areas, and parking availability. |
| 4 | Social Vibe Index™ | 15% | The overall energy of the park — owner responsibility, dog social match quality, and observed conflict rate. Our proprietary metric. |
| 5 | Accessibility | 10% | How easy it is to get to, hours of operation, seasonal closures, and ADA accessibility. |
| 6 | Durability (Gear) | 10% | How well a product holds up after repeated use in real park conditions. Lab tests don't impress us — Parker does. |
| 7 | Value for Money | 5% | Whether the product or park experience justifies its cost. Free doesn't automatically mean good. |
| 8 | Innovation | 5% | Unique features, thoughtful design, or a fresh approach that sets a product or park apart from the competition. |
| 9 | Design & Aesthetics | 2.5% | Visual appeal and ergonomics. It matters — but not nearly as much as safety. |
| 10 | Overall Experience | 2.5% | Our subjective take after multiple visits or extended testing. The intangible "would we come back" factor. |
How We Assign Grades
Exceeds expectations in nearly every category. We'd drive across town for this park or pay full price for this product.
Solid performer with minor drawbacks. A park we'd visit regularly or a product we'd confidently recommend.
Gets the job done but doesn't stand out. Fine if it's your only option, but there are usually better alternatives.
Significant issues that affect the experience. We'd only recommend it if you have very specific needs.
We can't recommend it. Either unsafe, poorly maintained, or fundamentally flawed.
Our Testing Conditions
- Park visits: We visit each park at least 3 times — weekday morning, weekend afternoon, and one off-peak time — before publishing a review.
- Gear testing: Products are tested by Jake (with his Golden Retriever, Parker) and Michelle (with dogs at her training facility in Queens).
- Testing period: Gear is tested for a minimum of 2 weeks of regular use before scoring. Long-term durability notes are added at 3-month and 6-month follow-ups.
- Testers: Jake has visited 200+ dog parks across 34 states. Michelle is a certified dog trainer with 10+ years of behavior correction experience.
- No sponsors: We buy every product we test with our own money. No brand pays for placement, and no one gets to see our scores before publication.
Scoring Update Policy
- Park reviews are re-evaluated every 12 months or when significant changes are reported.
- Gear scores are updated at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months with durability notes.
- If a product is discontinued, the review remains but is marked "Discontinued — see alternatives."
- Reader feedback can trigger a re-evaluation at any time. Use the contact form to report changes.
Conflict of Interest Statement
USA Dog Parks participates in the Amazon Associates and DHgate affiliate programs. We earn a commission when you purchase through our links — at no extra cost to you. This does not influence our scores. We've turned down thousands of dollars in commissions by being honest about what not to buy. If a product isn't good enough, we say so, and we don't link to it.
